About Acharacle & Ardnamurchan Area

The River Shiel, very close, is the home to much wildlife including otters, swans, ducks, geese. The river meanders its way a couple of miles to Dorlin, sandy beach and Castle Tioram, a 13th century ruined castle on a headland, the beach is wide and shallow making it an ideal location for canoeing around the area, headlands and islands.

The bridge over the River Shiel near Moorfield House gives stunning views towards Loch Shiel and Beinn Resipole. Loch Shiel ‘Eagle Watch Cruises’ go up the Loch towards or to Glenfinnan providing spectacular views of the changing scenery and past the lovely St Finnans Isle a pre-Christian burial island.
An enchanting walk through pine forests at nearby Arivegaig bring you to the superb beach called ‘Singing Sands’ long stretches of unspoilt white sandy beaches and sand dunes face west towards the Islands.
Acharacle is within easy day trip distance to the beautiful Isle of Mull via the ferry from Kilchoan to Tobermory, fishing town, famous for the delightfully painted houses along the quay side.
Ardnamurchan is an old volcano and has very interesting geology. For those interested in history there are many deserted settlements to be explored along the peninsula. The lighthouse at the end of the peninsula is the most westerly point on the British Isles. The crashing seas on a ‘not so nice day’ can be breathtaking at the lighthouse.
Nearer to base the walks at the Sunart Oakwoods [project] areas in and around Salen the neighbouring village 3 miles away are lovely pathway walks in the oak woods with view around Loch Sunart. Or have a more strenuous climb up Beinn Resipole which on a clear day provides fabulous views in all directions especially west towards the inner Hebrides.

A trip to Fort William via Glenuig can reveal breathtaking view of the inner Isles and then onto the historic Glenfinnan monument for a day out on the Jacobite steam train, or the Nevis Ski range with Gondola, or the Caledonian Canal with Neptune's Staircase at Banavie.
